Background of Amendment

After the colonists won independence from Great Britain and Parliament, they wanted to protect their basic rights. This would also mean that they wanted a government that was democratic and fair. To do so, they wrote first the Declaration of Independence but the laws that they felt needed to be added, we written in a new document called the Bill of Rights, which is the first ten amendments of the United States Constitution.

The Fifth Amendment was added because the colonists were very displeased with King George III's way of running the government in Great Britain and the colonies. There were many events that led the colonists to want this amendment such as having taxation without representation, the Battles of Lexington and Concord, the Quartering Act, and the Stamp Act. There was a need
for them to set up a different type of government.
Ultimately, they wanted a government that would protect their rights.
Amendment V
No person shall be held to answer for a capital, or otherwise infamous crime, unless on a presentment or indictment of a Grand Jury, except in cases arising in the land or naval forces, or in the Militia, when in actual service in time of War or public danger; nor shall any person be subject for the same offence to be twice put in jeopardy of life or limb, nor shall be compelled in any criminal case to be a witness against himself, nor be deprived of life, liberty, or property, without due process of law; nor shall private property be taken for public use, without just compensation.
In my own word, the amendment says that...
All citizens have the right to remain silent and to a jury and judge. It also is saying that you cannot be tried for the same reason more than once and that you cannot have any rights taken away from you, being a United States citizen. Finally, it states that property, if done so, must be taken away for public use in the trial and must be compensated for.
